The Cowichan Valley Museum & Archives is currently presenting The Importance of Place, an exhibition featuring the work of local artist Henk Scholten.
Henk immigrated from Holland at the age of nine and spent more than 50 years working as a carpenter and builder in the Cowichan Valley. His artwork reflects that deep connection to the built environment, with colourful and detailed scenes of historic churches, farms, houses, community buildings, landscapes, animals, and familiar faces.
As a builder, Henk helped shape the Cowichan Valley. As an artist, he now records and interprets it.
The Importance of Place is on display at the Cowichan Valley Museum & Archives, 130 Canada Avenue in Duncan, until September 10, 2026.
