How many of us in British Columbia can say “hello” in the language of the Indigenous people on whose traditional lands we live, work, and play?

Our Living Languages: First Peoples’ Voices in BC invites visitors to explore the resilience and diversity of Indigenous languages across the province. Through immersive displays, interactive stations, and firsthand accounts, this engaging exhibition highlights the efforts of First Nations communities to sustain and revitalize 34 different languages—languages that carry the histories, cultures, and identities of their speakers.

Developed by the Royal BC Museum and the First Peoples’ Cultural Council, Our Living Languages sheds light on the challenges Indigenous languages have faced, while celebrating the ongoing work being done to ensure their survival. BC is one of the most linguistically diverse regions in the world, and this exhibition showcases the deep connections between language, culture, and community in a local and national context.

Featuring video, audio, and hands-on learning opportunities, Our Living Languages is an eye-opening and inspiring look at language revitalization efforts throughout the province. Originally displayed at the Royal BC Museum in Victoria, this travelling exhibition now brings the stories of Indigenous language survival and renewal to communities across BC.
